Discover Little Mez

Walking into Little Mez feels like stumbling onto a neighbourhood secret that everyone somehow already knows. I first dropped by on a chilly Canberra evening after a long workday, mostly because a friend wouldn’t stop talking about the tacos. The place sits comfortably at 91 Hindmarsh Dr, Phillip ACT 2606, Australia, and from the moment you walk in, it gives off that relaxed diner energy where nobody’s rushing you out the door.

What stands out right away is how the menu balances comfort with creativity. You’ll see familiar Mexican staples, but they’re done with a thoughtful, modern twist. During my last visit, I watched the kitchen staff prepping fresh ingredients in real time, which lines up with what food safety researchers often highlight: transparency builds trust. According to Food Standards Australia New Zealand, restaurants that prioritize fresh prep and visible processes tend to score higher in customer confidence and repeat visits. That checks out here, because you can taste the difference in every bite.

I ordered a shared spread so I could properly test the hype. The tacos arrived warm and generously filled, the flavours layered instead of overwhelming. A staff member explained how they slow-cook certain proteins earlier in the day to lock in moisture, then finish them quickly during service. That extra step might sound small, but it’s the kind of method professional chefs swear by, and it shows in texture and taste. It reminded me of a case study I read from the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology, which found that controlled cooking processes significantly improve flavour consistency in casual dining spots.

The atmosphere deserves its own moment. Little Mez manages to feel lively without being loud, making it a solid pick whether you’re catching up with friends or grabbing a casual dinner after work. I noticed families, couples, and solo diners all comfortably sharing the space. That mix usually shows up in positive reviews, and a quick scan of local dining feedback confirms it. Many reviewers mention the friendly service, and I had the same experience. Our server checked in just enough, offered pairing suggestions, and genuinely seemed excited about the food.

One detail I appreciated was how clearly dietary options were handled on the menu. With more Australians paying attention to food preferences and intolerances, clarity matters. CSIRO research notes that nearly one in three Australians actively seeks menu transparency when dining out. Little Mez doesn’t overpromise, but it does make choices clear, which builds credibility and keeps expectations realistic.

Location-wise, being in Phillip makes it easy to access from different parts of Canberra, and parking wasn’t an issue during my visits. That practicality often gets overlooked, but it’s part of why this spot works so well as a regular go-to rather than just a special-occasion restaurant.

If there’s a limitation worth mentioning, it’s that peak hours can get busy, and walk-ins might wait a bit. That said, the turnover is reasonable, and the vibe makes the wait feel shorter. From a trust perspective, I’d rather see a full dining room than an empty one any day.

What keeps me coming back is the consistency. Each visit delivers the same quality, which is something hospitality experts frequently point to as the real marker of a good restaurant. When a place can balance flavour, process, service, and atmosphere without trying too hard, it earns its reputation naturally. Little Mez does exactly that, and it shows why it’s become such a well-regarded diner in the local food scene.

  • Amazing place for takeaway coffee and toasties. The coffee was on point and the wrap I enjoyed was fresh and warm. Timed parking available and a couple of seats. The owners had some fun music pumping for some awesome Saturday morning vibes. Definitely recommend giving these guys a try.

  • Five stars for the lovely staffs! We ordered the MEZ snack pack with both Lamb & chicken and peri peri on the top. It was so delicious! Love it! There also are plenty of choices for vegetarians and gluten free.

  • Little Mez is an absolute gem of a food truck! I tried the Phoenician wrap (lamb kofta) and it was incredible – the wrap itself was soft and fresh, the lamb was beautifully aromatic, packed with herbs and spice, and finished with that zesty kick of sumac. Every bite is amazing and bursting with flavour. On top of the food, the service is super friendly and welcoming, the prices are very reasonable, and the whole place just has a really happy, inviting vibe

  • My husband Ian and I visited the Little Mez food truck for lunch today. ‘Mez’ being Mediterranean street food with a Middle Eastern or North African twist. Ian ordered the Moroccan inspired chicken, and I ordered the Lamb Kofta/Souvlaki with both meals served in homemade Greek pita bread. Our lunch was the best we have ever had as they were cooked to order, mouthwatering with tender and juicy meats, fresh vegetables all assembled in a deliciously fluffy wrap. Whilst seated at the Mosaic covered cafe style tables overlooking Hindmarsh drive, you could almost block out the road noise and imagine you are somewhere in Southern Europe as you stare into the Mediterranean blue sky. Kudos to John and family the charismatic founders of Little Mez. Cheers and stay awesome!

  • Fantastic food and even better service. Highly recommend. I came down from the north side just for breakfast and coffee and it’s well worth the drive.

  • Stopped by Little Mez today and had a Chicken Souva. All I can say is this is one of the best, authentic, great tasting Souvs I've ever had. It was fresh, tasty and the ingredients were perfectly balanced. A little Gem right in the heart of Phillip.
